Day 2: Arriving in Paradise (Belize City to Hopkins)

Today I took a bus from Belize city to Dangriga where I met up with my aunt and uncle. I left my hostel around 9am, and walked to the bus station which was probably about a 20 minute walk. I walk a little slower with my backpack on, so I left early. I was planning on catching the 10am bus since there is one that leaves every hour on the hour. However, there was one there about to leave, so I hopped on. I met a very nice lady who was sitting across the aisle from me named Sandy. She leaned over the aisle and whispered to me "be very careful, especially traveling alone, don't let people know that you are alone. Try to act like you're meeting with someone and never look lost." I told her that I try, but it's obvious that I'm a tourist - white with a giant backpack. She asked where I'm from and I told her the U.S., which she was too! Although to me, she looked native. Most people in Belize look either African, Spanish, or Caribbean. She seemed like she came to Belize a lot, and she informed me that she actually owns two houses here; one in the jungle and one on the beach! She gave me her email and  offered for me to stay with her the next time that I'm in Belize! The ride was quick, only 3 hours, and was without any problems.

Upon arrival, it was only about 12pm. I wasn't supposed to meet Brett and Barb until 2ish, so I went to find lunch. Around 1 I left the restaurant to wait for them at our predetermined meeting spot of an ice cream shop. Surprisingly, they were early too! Their cab driver recognized me and said that I must be the girl that they were looking for. After eating some ice cream, we went on our way to Hopkins with some stops along the way. I checked into my hostel - The Funky Dodo, which is just steps away from the beach.

This place truly is paradise.
